FAQ - Food Recovery

Is there any liability?

North Carolina's Good Samaritan Food Donation Act protects donors from civil and criminal liability when food is donated in good faith. You are covered, no one has ever gotten sued in NC doing this.

What does the food recovery process look like?

First, you fill out the form and are placed with a volunteer or paid delivery partner. Next, we reach via phone and collect the food from your facility, using our packing or your packaging. Finally, we refridgerate and deliver the food to IFC Community Kitchen in <24hrs.

What is your exact food safety procedure?

We recover food that was prepared in the past 24hrs, refridgerated or hot. All tray kits come with latex gloves and lids to prevent contamination. We begin refridgerating every pickup within 30m of collection.

How much notice do you need for a pickup?

For recurring partnerships, we schedule in advance. For same-day donations, our large volunteer pool enables us to get the food out of your hands within a few hours.

Where does the food go?

All recovered food goes to community members experiencing food insecurity in the Chapel Hill area. Every donation is tracked, we can tell you exactly how many meals your contribution produced and where the food went.
